Microsoft 2013 has a number of differences when compared to Microsoft 2010, most notably the completely new interface. Overall however, in comparison to previous Microsoft Office releases, the changes are subtle, with some of them available as downloads for Microsoft 2010 users. Here are some of the biggest changes, broken down by each of the main software programs within Microsoft 2013.

Microsoft Word

Microsoft Office 2013 not only offers users the ability to drag, drop, and move photos around in their Word documents, but also allows users to import media directly from social media websites like Bing, Flickr, Facebook, and YouTube. This significantly improves ease of use when compared to Microsoft 2010, where any imported videos or images had to be downloaded locally to the computer creating the document, or the device being used for the presentation.

Excel

This generation of Microsoft Excel appears to have the fewest changes, with the majority being small upgrades in regards to features from earlier programs. The largest change was an improvement in customised filters and slicers which will help the user organize and understand their data.

PowerPoint

For Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft has added a “Presenter View”, which allows speakers to view their notes during their presentation, along with an ability to “Present Online,” which allows the customer to stream their presentation online should they choose to.

Outlook

The latest version of Microsoft’s business email client has a completely new interface to match the new Outlook.com email service that has replaced Hotmail. Outlook 2013 shows a brief preview of the email so the customer can have an idea of what the email says without fully opening it. Microsoft 2010 users can add this option as well by selecting the AutoPreview option under their View tab.

OneNote

As with previous versions, OneNote 2013 is designed to help take, organize, and share notes. Again, the changes in this version are mostly related to the interface. OneNote MX is a new version of the program that has been optimized for touch-friendly devices and can be downloaded for free via the Windows 8 store.

Microsoft 2013 also offers complete integration with Microsoft SkyDrive, which is a free way to store your documents “in the cloud” so the documents can be easily accessed from any internet-connected computer, or through the SkyDrive mobile app. Many people are not aware that this integration is also available for Microsoft 2010 users through a free download from Microsoft.
